Real Central VA Hosts Carnival of the Green

University of Richmond Awarded Energy Monitoring System

Thanks to a grant from Dominion Power, the University of Richmond (Virginia) will get $100,000 to improve their energy efficiency. The money will go towards purchasing and installing a monitoring system in all 14 of its residence dorms. Over 1,000 students signed a petition in support of the project.

Middle School Student Invents Ingenious Water Saving Device

When By Kids For Kids (BKFK) and The Weather Channel launched the Going Green Challenge to inspire kids to come up with neat inventions to help make an eco-difference there’s little doubt that the field was an open one. With a myriad of issues in need of resolution, the grand prize winner, Elizabeth Rintels, 12, of Keswick, Virginia, came up with a “Water Watcher” invention that helps monitor water usage in an ingenious way....

School District Eyes Four Day School Week in Bid to Cut Energy Costs

In what sounds like a bright idea there’s a school district in Virginia committed to studying the idea of a 4 day school week as energy costs climb. A practice which would mean less time on the road for school buses along with lower heating bills and CO2 emissions because the schools heat supply could be shut down for a three day weekend.

Not to mention the need for one less set of school lunches to be shipped and prepared, along with one less daily commute for school personnel. All of which would most certainly cut both energy usage and CO2 as well.

But is it a genuine possibility or an implausible pipe dream?
