Who says that wind power can’t provide large parts of a nation’s electric needs? For a brief period on Monday, November 24th wind power provided 43% of all of Spain’s demand for electricity, according to the Spanish wind power association. A Spanish town outside of Barcelona has found a way to make the best of a cramped situation: lacking sufficient flat, sun-soaked land to implement their renewable energy program, they opted to install solar panels in their local cemetery.

25% Efficiency: SolFocus Introduces New Concentrating Solar PV Product

While its previous concentrating solar PV products convert about 18% of the light hitting them into electricity, the new SolFocus 1100S can achieve a panel efficiency of 25%. Intended for use in medium to utility-scale installations, the panels will be used by Spain's EMPE Solar in the recently announced 10 MW ‘world’s largest’ CPV project, expected to be completed in 2010.

We were delighted when Casa Decor, one of the leading interior design shows taking place in cities like London, Miami, Milan, Madrid or Lisbon, chose sustainability as this year’s theme for the Barcelona edition. After more than 38 exhibitions all around the world, presenting the latest in interior design, decoration and art, the Barcelona team has made an effort to motivate this year’s exhibiting designers to go green, under the slogan Pathway to a Sustainable Environment or Rumbo Sostenible in Spanish. World’s Largest Concentrating Solar PV Project Announced by SolFocus

Though it won’t be completed until 2010, and its overall capacity will be divided across several sites, SolFocus has announced that it has signed a deal with EMPE Solar worth $103 million that will install over 10 megawatts of CPV power at sites in southern Spain. SolFocus says that the project will create enough electricity for a city of about 40,000 people. While the company claims it as being the largest CPV project in Europe, Greentech Media points out that it will be the largest in the world.

Morocco: Barça Fan Jailed for Superlative Statement

Many bloggers were shocked last week to learn that a young Moroccan man had been sentenced to 18 months imprisonment for what seemed like such a minor “crime.” The young man, a Barça (FC Barcelona, a soccer team) fan, allegedly wrote “God, Nation, Barça” on the blackboard at his school. Morocco's motto is “God, Nation, King.”

Although FC Barcelona has already announced [es] they will support the young man and take whatever action is possible, precious little is known about his case.

Many of you will be aware of the magazine The Big Issue founded in 1991 by London social entrepreneur John Bird. If you have lived or spent time in Tokyo, Osaka, Sapporo, or Kyoto you will have seen the Japanese version of the magazine being sold by individual street sellers at train stations and major intersections.
