Renovation and Restoration

clingstone

Built in 1895 on a rock outcrop in Rhode Island’s Narragansett Bay, the house was abandoned in the 1940’s until it was bought by Henry Wood in 1961. What a great story. I’d live there, for sure. Lotta work maintaining it, though. Read the article and see the slideshow in the NYT

converted barn-stable, devanthéry and lamunière architectes

Suite Alpestre, Grange-écurie au Val d’Hérens, Evolène VS (Switzerland). 2003-2004.

I love projects like this: a classic alpine barn-stable converted into a summer residence. In the summer, grass hay was stored in the ‘barn’ above, and the animals were stabled below. During the winter, of course, the place sat empty, but was built to withstand avalanches: stone walls are used for the stable, huge beams of wood are used for the barn, and the roof is covered with a layer of dry stone. The entire structure was dismantled and numbered, then restored and rebuilt incorporating the kitchen and bathroom.

casa 218, candid rogers architect

218 Lavaca Street, San Antonio, Texas.

The residence, built in 1873, and was restored using original regional materials. An addition of 960 sq. ft. was added includes a kitchen, two bathrooms and two bedrooms. The new addition was set back of the existing residence, connecting sensitively to the rear to allow for an uninterrupted place and siting of the original residence. The small addition works to contrast with and complement the original stone cottage by cladding the new addition in galvanized metal panels with scale in relation to the original house and roofing material.
