The latest in a series of environmental initiatives undertaken by New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg takes on plastic bags. Here are some more details, such as there are, on the Mayor’s plan:

Reusable Bagging It, Envirosax-Style

Envirosax Mikado Bags photo

There are quite a collection of cloth bags hanging in my kitchen closet - some washed so many times in the last half-dozen years the different advertising images are faded and barely legible. So perhaps it's not surprising that the bins full of designy shopping bags (mostly from Envirosax) at the Dansk Design Center store were a lot like colorful candy to me on the day I visited.

Reusable bags - how much would you pay?

Anything rPET is better than anything virgin polyester.

rPET is the new polyester

Los Angeles City Council Votes to Ban Plastic Shopping Bags by July 2010 (Maybe)

plastic bag photoBetter late than never, I suppose -- though LA's planned 2010 citywide ban still seems downright meek given that San Francisco, Australia and, yes, even China have already or are in the process of implementing a ban. And, of course, it's important to note that this plan will only go through if (and it's a big if) the state fail...
