Bottled Water Scourge Countered by Manly Council’s Free Filtered Water

Manly Council Bubble Project photoPhoto by Peter Morris, from The Age

Australia’s Manly Council is striving to wean its residents and tourist visitors off bottled water. After Bondi Beach, Manly is possibly Australia’s most well known beach suburb and thus attracts a plethora of visitors who often cross Sydney Harbour by ferry to get there. However being such a drawcard has its downsides, like the sheer volume of single-use, bottled water containers.

Olympus Greens Packaging and Invites Global Warming Witnesses

olympus picture card photo

We might like to think that the shift to digital photography is less wasteful that the film medium from days of yore. And whilst there may be an element of truth in this assumption, the photoigraphic industry is still prone to issues of packaging waste. So it was pleasing the hear that Olympus Imaging America is setting out to reduce their impact in this regard.

HP Bags Wal-Mart's Reduced Packaging Award With Laptop In A Bag

It's at least a bit ironic that Wal-Mart drove HP to come up with some seemingly significant packaging reductions for its Pavilion dv6929. After all, Wal-Mart IS still the place where you can leave the store with a 1-to-1 plastic bag-to-purchase ratio.

Consumer packaging reduction of 97 percent
Still, reduced packaging is a beloved theme here at TreeHugger, and both HP and Wal-Mart deserve a little respect. Wal-Mart offered the Home Entertainment Design Challenge - HP responded by cutting conventional packaging on the dv6929 an unbelievable 97 percent. Gone are the styrofoam inserts and enveloping cardboard. What's left are couple of plastic ba...

Naked LUSH Employees Protest Excess Packaging in 24 U.S. Cities

First a disclaimer: I've always found offensive the trail of heady perfume that hangs around in the street outside any LUSH store, whether in Stockholm or San Francisco, Oslo or Orlando. And yet, I've never discovered a body care product line that does as much to reduce packaging as LUSH. Well, for minimalists, Dr. Bronner's tops LUSH for multiple uses, but leaves some of us with brillo-pad hair.

Which Is Greener, Wine Bottle or Box? Depends on the Box

wine-in-box.jpg

TreeHugger spares no expense or our livers in our search to find the greenest packaging for wine. After reading Ruben Anderson's article in Tyee, where he said "Do you really want to try to look your children in the eye and explain that they have to eat jellyfish gumbo because you couldn't resist that lovely imported shiraz?" I started looking for a greener, local alternative.

larry's-beans-bio-bag-image It’s no secret that we like Larry’s Beans. We’ve posted a few videos about the company and even included them in our Valentine’s Day Gift Guide. It's A Wrap: Clever Packaging from Japan

tofu in balloons photo

When I was in Japan I was appalled at the amount of waste in packaging, where things were often wrapped in three layers of plastic and paper; all magnificently designed and beautifully done, but generating a lot of garbage. Things may be changing; Ping Mag covers innovations in packaging that reduce waste significantly. Two of my favourites are the tofu packed in balloons; when you pierce it with a toothpick only a tiny bit of plastic remains. Also available with pudding....

Shrinking Container Sizes, Rising (Eco-) Costs

less ice cream in each package image

Are Producers Helping You to Stay on Budget?
USA Today recently headlined a shocking review of the big name food companies that are trying to beat rising costs by reducing package sizes. Granted, most of us could probably do with cutting our consumption of Edy's ice cream by 14% (1.75 quart containers have suddenly become 1.5 quarts), a little less Hellmann's mayo on the bread, or spreading Shedd's Country Crock a bit more thinly (32 ounce jar drops to 30, and 48 ounces shrinks to 45 ounces, respectively). But should manufacturers make this decision for us?

The French Rabbit Strike Again- TH Interviews Jean Charles Boisset about the wine industry

Jean%20Charles%20Boisset%27s%20Aluminum%20Blue%20Dot%20Beaujolais.jpg

TH did a story about the French Rabbit a few years ago, and now Jean Charles is back preaching his innovative wine packaging to oenophiles and the masses. He is fully aware that some people in the wine industry may think he is an extraterrestrial. Even some previous TH readers said "I'll pass and stick with glass". But, certainly not Tom who is opening a wine bar in New York City....
