how about a hand for our man with a plan?

Karrie Jacobs interviewed our own editor Greg La Vardera for the October ‘08 issue of Metropolitan Home! I first met Greg on the old Dwell message board (R.I.P.), and was immediately drawn to his kindness, intelligence and ideals. Throw some humor in there, too. The man deserves a round of applause, because I can assure you, the path he’s followed has been…….. let’s just say, an interesting one. You da man, Greg.

introducing: design shizen

“I’m psyched to announce and introduce a sister site to Jetson Green called Design Shizen.  Design Shizen was built to become a source of inspiration for people seeking the best information relating to green architecture, news, design, and innovation.  You’ll notice that it operates like most community generated content sites out there, namely Reddit, but the big difference is the community behind it.  The Design Shizen community will be readers like you and me: green entrepreneurs, innovators, thinkers, thought leaders, and professionals.”

Go, Preston!

quote of the day

If you want a golden rule that will fit everything, this is it: Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.

eco framing

Eco Framing is the first custom picture framing studio dedicated to “green” best practices. They feature sustainable woods, bamboo moulding, advanced recycling and a reinvented supply chain that dramatically reduces the carbon footprint of our work. They offer top quality, museum-grade work at lower prices with faster turnaround.  Some of their feature products include variable content display systems (FlexFrame) that enable on-demand swap out of graphics, and a line of P3 ceramic steel magnetic boards. I like.

And yes, I’m feeling better, but it’s a long, slow road back. Thanks. :)

update on justin’s condition

It’s what I feared: sciatica. My father has it, as well. The common thread between my father and I is we both suffered accidents as teens, resulting in lifelong back problems - he at 17, falling off a trampoline, and I at 18, falling through a floor 33 feet and landing smack on my ass, resulting in a broken wrist and a dislocated vertabrae (T8 vertabrae). Ever since then, I’ve suffered from lumbar disc problems, and my lack of attention to preventive measures has now resulted in the aforementioned condition. What to do, what to do. Sitting in this chair aggravates my condition like you wouldn’t believe. I last 5 minutes, 10 tops.

apologies for the glacial pace

Several reasons:

1. Greg La Vardera is working hard (as usual) on several of his own projects - most notably a studio made from shipping containers for artist and Typepad wiz John T. Unger. It’s a great project!

amazing floor-by-floor demolition

Leave it to the Japanese to come up with the best way to demo a building. No muss, no fuss. It’s just brilliant. And 20% faster than the old way, which is messy, indeed.

apologies for missing images

Almost all the images on this blog are hosted at Photobucket, and apparently something is amiss at the moment… To say “Justin’s pissed off!” is putting it mildly.

Stay tuned.
