China's New Hybrid Cars: Almost Affordable in China

In a country where 5.2 million cars were bought last year, and where "environmental protection" is a major buzz word, you might think that the Chinese have been ramping up their cheap, domestic-made hybrid cars. Nope. The only hybrids currently available are Japanese, the Toyota Prius and the Honda Civic. And while they're assembled in China, importing the parts from Japan means heavy taxes, which means that these cars costs double in China than what they do in the US. That's why only 417 Priuses were sold in China last year.

Alternative Vehicle Sales at 1.8 Million for 2007

The Environmental Blog was asked to join a conference call with the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers to discuss sales and figures for alternative vehicles before the press release comes out. That means the news you are reading here is first hand and before anyone else.

Sales figures for 2007 are in for the alternative vehicle market. They are at a whopping 1.8 million for 2007. This figure is up about 250,000 from the previous year in 2006 and some people say the figure could jump to 2 million for 2008. Included in these figures are:

  • Hybrids
  • Flex Fuel Vehicles
  • Clean Diesel

    The hybrid market alone jumped 37% from 2006 to 2007. The 2006 sales figure was 253,000 and the 2007 sales figure was 347,000.

They encompass the gasoline engine and electric motor to bring improved fuel efficiency. The technology couldn't have come at a better time due to the increased fuel consumption being seen around the world.     New Honda Hybrids

    According to a blogger at CNET, Honda has announced that it will unveil a new global hybrid car at the 2008 Paris Auto Show. Both cars are part of Honda's new strategy of selling 400,000 hybrids, about 10 percent of total car sales, by the year 2011.

    My Honda Civic Hybrid

    I wanted to take the time to tell people the car that I drive. For an environmental blog I feel that it is important walk the walk instead of just talk the talk. One of the ways I contribute to reduction in greenhouse gases and pollution through is through my Honda Civic Hybrid. I did not want to be one of those people who automatically went for a Prius, although nice, I am just a Honda kind of guy.
