A Holiday is A Terrible Thing to Waste

The following essay started as an email to my extended family and friends.

When I think of Christmas, I think of the stuff often found under trees: toys and books and computers, DVD players and colorful paper.

I don't mean the Christmas tree. During the holidays in my neighborhood in New York, I see this stuff left under the spindly, anemic black trees that line sidewalks, waiting to be carted away to the landfill, or wherever else it goes (more on that later). It's estimated that Americans generate about 5 million more tons of waste than usual between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day....
