15 Years, 15 Stories: Seeds of a Green Revolution

My bike and I are off to Boston for the Greenbuild International Conference and Expo, to see eight hundred exhibitors, dozens of speakers ranging from Archbishop Desmond Tutu to Van Jones and Bill McKibben, with Bill Clinton thrown in. It's huge, and every hotel room in Boston is booked.

Yet 15 years ago it might have been held in a phone booth; the green building movement was tiny and disorganized...

Greenbuild International Conference and Expo was launched in 2002 as the world's largest conference and expo dedicated to green building. This year attendees will learn about new green building products, innovative projects, the latest building research and more. The conference boasts over 100 eco friendly educational sessions, 800 exhibitors, international master speakers, practical green building workshops and green building tours in Boston November 19-21 for Greenbuild 2008.

Students Design for Change at Australian GreenTECH

For all the talk of green design and eco lifestyles, it’s odd that Australia has so few events for businesses, organisations and institutions to showcase their wares in this area. Melbourne does have its very well attended Sustainable Living Festival, where last year they also managed to hold the World’s Largest Green Drinks party. But Sydney, while having a few smaller community level green days is not quite so blessed in events that promote the bigger picture.

Profitable Residential Green Building: Can It Save the Real Estate Market?

Residential green building has arrived. Once the niche of innovative companies like Living Homes and Michelle Kauffman Designs, green building has begun to be embraced by traditional residential builders. In the recent McGraw Hill Report: The Green Home Builder, Navigating for Success in a Down Market, they report that 6-10% of the market this year will be green vs. 2% in 2005.

Ecofriendly Prefab Homes Debut in Turkey

In Turkish, the word for a slum is gecekondu, meaning "settled overnight." A prefabricated house doesn't go up quite that quickly, but mass production can make homes--of both the conventional and ecofriendly type--available to more people at varying income levels.

Green Jobs Can Bail Out the Environment, Rebuild Communities: Worldwatch Institute

In case you needed any more reinforcement of the idea that one of the best way to move out of the current financial morass is by promoting and expanding the green job sector, a new report from Worldwatch Institute called Green Jobs: Working for People and the Environment outlines the scale of green jobs already out there and advocates that a “bailout for the environment” can create jobs on a global level and “help rebuild communities amidst the ashes of the current economic crisis.”
