'Pocket Library': Book Storage for Small Places, by Ariel Jacubovich

Library storage small spaces Ariel Jacubovich Photo

From our great archive of ideas that show less is more you get it: we love small spaces. Especially important in times of economic stress, they make us think about what we really need, give maximum usage to what we have, and they take a lot less energy to keep running. And of course, we love clever furniture that helps us live better in those places.

Young designers are using new materials in innovative ways and the Royal College of Art show is a good place to check them out. Yemi Anosile is fascinated with cork, one of the great ecological materials--it is a natural material that can be renewably harvested from the bark of trees. She has done extensive research on its uses and spent time in Portugal, both in Lisbon and in the Alentejo where it is produced.

No Parts Available: Business Model For An Unsustainable Future

gazebo design business model photo

The pictured gazebo was purchased at a major home center two years ago, for less than two hundred US dollars. When first bought, the cloth top, if taken down during the cold weather months, seemed like it might last three or four years. The decorative extruded steel support framework, which stays fastened to the deck surface year-round, originally looked like it would last five to ten years and still does. (I've been touching up any rust spots with black enamel as they appear.)

ode chair

ODEChair by Jolyon Yates.
“An ODE is a lyrical poem that pays respect to that which inspired it. The subject of that respect is those who have lent thoughts, inspiration or kindness in the development of these pieces; friends and family, mother nature; the Atlantic Ocean; Northumberland; New Zealand; the rain. Specifically, this ODE is to those that we meet and learn from on our journeys. In a world of loveless volume manufacturing, ODEChairs display soul by reflecting the care and honesty with which they have been conceived and crafted”.

henrybuilt, a Seattle-based manufacturer of modern kitchen systems and storage solutions, has recently launched their “whole house” line and opened their new flagship showroom in Seattle. Often compared in the press to Bulthaup and Boffi, they have quickly risen in status for the beauty and quality of their product. I’m only posting one picture, because there are just too many to choose from. Everything they make is just gorgeous.

Used Coffins Find Afterlife as Couches

Coffin Couches

Goths and vampire fetishists will go gaga over Coffin Couches, a company that turns caskets that mortuaries ordinarily toss into the dumpster—thanks to cosmetic defects or the fact that they were used for display—into macabre conversation pieces you can rest your tuckus on for significantly less than an eternity.
