Violence and extinction in Tasmania's forests

The last three days have been quite a revelation of exactly what's going on in Tasmania's forests. Regardless of the rhetoric of sensitive management of the forests, the real story is one of wantonly sending species towards extinction and viciously attacking those brave souls who stand up for protection.

Exposed: Photos Show Kimberly-Clark Gets Trees From Ancient Forests

New photos released today reveal a massive stockpile of old-growth logs from the Boreal forest destined to be made into Kleenex and toilet paper for tissue giant Kimberly-Clark. As recently as August 30th, Kimberly-Clark has claimed that "much of [the] fiber from the Canadian Boreal forest comes to K-C in the form of wood pulp produced from sawdust and chips – or leftovers – of the lumber pr...

The bathroom is the room where we begin and end each day, with a variety of cleaning routines designed to help keep us healthy. Odd then, that the room in which we clean our teeth, our skin and the rest of our bodies (not to mention dispose of our waste) is often filled with toxic chemicals, and, even then, not very clean itself. So, how do you stay clean, promote good health, and go green in your bathroom?

Queen Elizabeth Makes Balmoral Home All Green

Balmoral is the Queen's Scottish summer retreat and her favourite place to go for R and R. Now HRH has taken steps to make her cottage completely self-sufficient, energy wise. She has installed a small hydro-electric plant developed on a rushing stream in the estate forest. It generates enough to supply electricity to the 1,000 residents in the area with the excess sold to the national grid. The Queen has registered all the woodlands with the Forestry Stewardship Council which supports sustainable forestry worldwide. All farming practices are registered with the Soil Association, which promotes organic food and farming.

Reuters reported last week that a Congolese-government funded study recommends that ¾ of logging contracts should be ended immediately for not meeting required standards.

The study, which looked at 156 logging deals, was conducted in order to recoup millions of dollars in tax money and to put an end to a “business ripe with corruption." In 2002, the Congo put a 5-year halt on any new logging contracts but that has been largely ignored as new contracts are still being approved....

Colin Finlay, a former photocopy machine salesman turned world class photographer may represent the tip of the spear when it comes to the public consciousness of climate change. Even the Queen of England is a fan: He's about to be knighted for his efforts to bring the impact of climate change to the masses. Finlay has the rare ability to capture images that sear an indelible mark on the soul of those who view them; his gift is a human face to the crisis at hand....

Scientists Say Great Migrations Need Protection

Picture the scene: Millions of passenger pigeons crossing North America in packs over a mile wide, taking several days to finally pass over an area. (Not to mention the left-behind destruction of all that poop!). Or maybe, multitudes of stampeding buffalo crossing the wide open plains of Middle America. Hard to imagine these scenes today with all of our interstate highways and byways criss-crossing everywhere, but researchers on a recently published article in PLoS Biology report that these migrations are not only important but that they should be protected....

Turkish Gov’t. Leaves Eco-Dark Ages Behind By Lending Books to Students in Bid to Save Trees and Cash

In a practice I can hardly fathom, the Turkish government has been giving 155 million new textbooks each year to students, most of which are thrown into the trash at the end of the year rather than simply requiring they return them for use by next year’s crop of students.

Of course there’s not only an environmental cost to this enormous waste of resources, but an economic cost as well, with the books costing the Turkish public more than $800 million annually.
