In what some might dismiss as a opportunistic play for the burgeoning market for green fashion, Payless Shoesource will be launching a line of green shoes, clocking in at an average of $30. But look a little deeper, and you'll see that Summer Rayne Oakes, the iconic poster child of green fashion, whose good looks may distract you from the fact she's deeply qualified to consult on both what's most sustainable and at the same time fashionable, is on board here.

The second part of our Interview with Ian Yolles, head of marketing head at the newly resuscitated Nau, a green outdoor clothing maker, which just re-opened it website. Yesterday, in the first part, we delved deeper in to the business side of matters at the new Nau. For this half our investigation looks more at the product itself.

It's not hard to see the increased appeal of vintage and clothing swaps in a (necessarily?) contracting economy. Some of us have been second-hand thrift shoppers before it was cool, though, because we were economically-challenged and/or liked the thrill of the free find.
Found clothing is the opposite of "fast fashion"

The journey of the UK ethical fashion label People Tree has been a remarkable one. As founder Safia Minney says in the introduction of her new book By Hand the story started in Japan in 1991 "and 14 years later I found myself sitting at the World Economic Forum in Davos." It is an amazing achievement for a grass roots Fair Trade fashion company to have such an influential voice on the world stage.

Designer Melissa Baswell was working with hemp and organic fabrics, and dyeing with low-impact dyes, long before "eco" became as buzzword and back when eco-fashion was saddled with the unsavory rep of being as fashion-forward as burlap.
