Despite mounting evidence of the myriad negative effects of factory farming, it remains the foundation of animal agribusiness. The indecent nature of the enterprise is manifested in numerous abusive practices and increasingly, activists are looking to the courts and legislatures to demand change. Is government intervention necessary to enact corporate responsibility?
The recently passed Farm Bill included an amendment to the Lacey Act which extends protection to plants and trees illegally harvested outside of the U.S. TheLacey Act, named after congressman, Rep. John Lacey, the Congressman who introduced it, and signed into law in 1900, authorized the Secretary of the Interior to restore "game and other birds...where where they have become scarce or extinct and to regulate the introduction of birds and animals in areas where they had not existed."

My grandmother’s first husband died of Creutzfeldt-Jacob Disease, otherwise known as mad cow disease, years before my grandmother married my grandfather. But since that time, this disease has always been in mind – when I studied in England in 1996, I was glad to be largely vegetarian, eating only one hamburger during my time there at the height of the mad cow scare. I hear about cows being slaughtered because their flock has been contaminated. I wonder how these things happen.
