Be Careful What You Wish For in Canada: A Greener Coalition Government May Happen

imagine-it-might.jpg

Just after the Canadian election last month we imagined the Liberal leader going to the Governor General and saying:

"Climate change is too important for petty politics. The four parties with strong pro-environment, pro-Kyoto platforms got 61% of the vote and control 163 seats to the conservatives' 143. We are forming a Coalition against Climate Change and intend to ask the Governor-General to let us form the government."

Now, because of some real political stupidity on the part of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, it just might happen; his minority government may fall next week.

Let's Have a Coalition Against Climate Change in Canada

coalition against climate change image

Word is that Stephane Dion is going to hold a press conference on Monday and resign as leader of the Liberal Party of Canada. Why? Who says Stephen Harper gets to form the next government? What if Dion made a different announcement? What if he got up to say:

"Climate change is too important for petty politics. The four parties with strong pro-environment, pro-Kyoto platforms got 61% of the vote and control 163 seats to the conservatives' 143. We are forming a Coalition against Climate Change and intend to ask the Governor-General to let us form the government."

It is a slam-dunk.

Canadian Election Update: Nothing to Report

canada french debate
Canadian party leaders look ready for a game of poker rather than a debate.

What idiot scheduled the big Canadian leader debate on the same night as the American VP showdown? Who wants to watch five Canadian party leaders all say pretty much the same thing when you can watch the Thrilla from Wazilla? The Canadian election is so boring in comparison. Incumbent Prime Minister Stephen Harper has done a remarkable job in keeping his radical base covered in duct tape and has been kissing babies instead of eating them. Until he pandered to his base by cutting arts funding last week he had the artsy urban green lefties on the run.

Canadian Election Update: Economy Trumps Environment

dion with gore image
Stephane Dion and Al Gore

Stéphane Dion has based his campaign on the Green Shift, a strong environmental stance that should be drawing all the Canadian Treehugger types to his side. But there is so much history of the Liberals as the Natural Governing Party that many environmentalists just have trouble considering a vote for the Liberals. In fact, the numbers are staggering: in British Columbia and Ontario, Green Party Leader Elizabeth May is outpolling Dion on some questions.
