A funny thing happened on the way to this post.

I wanted to write about the new line of e.c.o fleece items from Ash City - they use a fabric that is 75% recycled polyester/25% polyester.

These items are great for any eco-tourism or resort operating in a cold weather area, for eco-friendly landscaping work crews, maybe even as a resell item for a farmers market come the holiday season.

Dancing with the Devil

Over the last few years I’ve heard a lot of talk in the environmental and social entrepreneurship communities about the importance of ‘scalability’ in social ventures. Simply put, scalability is basically the ability for a system to expand. It’s one of the key indicators for grant or investor funding…but it often clashes with “green” values.

What If Clients Expect a Card? Can You Do It Green? - Recycled Holiday Cards

It is October and in the promotional products industry that means it is time to start talking about holiday cards.

Most companies find holiday cards a great way to show appreciation to their best clients or to send a special thank you to their employees.

Most green purists will likely say skip the card, save a tree and send email instead. The problem is that a lot of clients expect cards.

The Plastic Bag: To Re-Use or Not to Re-Use

chipsahoy_tote.jpg The Wall Street Journal ran a fascinating piece a couple of weeks ago on the emergence of the reusable bag as the go-to green choice of retailers nationwide – and the eco-disaster these bags represent.

A lot of leading retailers offer reusable bags – they’re the hip new green thing to be doing… and some municipalities (San Francisco) and retailers (Ikea) have taken the initiative to forbid the use of the ubiquitous "disposable" plastic bag.

But at what cost?

Tom Szaky: Do Green Companies Need Green Employees?

tompost2.jpg
One of the most challenging parts of building a lean and mean green company is finding the right balance of experience and passion. Especially in a young upstart company - like TerraCycle - where the status quo is often thrown out the window in favor of shaking up the typical "business as usual" model. But is it better (or even appropriate) to hire people who are committed to being green outside of work as well?

Wake Up Washington to the Climate Crisis

As some of you may know, Congress is on summer break and they did not address the current energy and climate crisis at hand. Not only did they not address gas prices, but they also failed to renew the clean energy tax cuts that will expire soon. These cuts fund solar, wind, and other renewable energy. Job loss and wasted time could be the result of this inaction by Congress. However, there is something, we the people can do!

Xtrema Teapot

I really like the Xtrema skillet. I’ve been using it regularly and it works really well, so I was excited to try the teapot. It starts to boil in just a few minutes, which is due to the nature of the ceramic. The problem is, regardless of the amount of water you put into the teapot, it boils over. The teapot does not whistle, so you really have to watch the water boil which isn’t too fun.

The remaining water in the pot stays hot after you pour your cup for tea, well if it hasn’t boiled over.
