photo: Martin

I don’t know about you but, as a writer and someone who likes to make lists, I keep a checklist of people who I’d just love to sit down with and not necessarily do an interview, but simply chat with about mutual interests. In the case of the following people, that interest would of course be the environment.

So here they are, the five people in the green movement whom I’d just love to have a couple of drinks with while chatting about the environment: Al Gore, Richard Branson, James Howard Kunstler, Vandana Shiva, and Prince Charles.

Quote of the Day: Robert Redford on Cleaner Energy

Robert Redford photo

We know how to solve our energy problems and to fight global warming—all we lack is honest, bold leadership. We had better find that leadership quickly, and not just for the sake of bringing down energy prices, but because it's essential to keep our whole economy competitive in a world rapidly moving beyond the dirty fuels of the past.

Isabella Rossellini's Green Porno Short Films Hit the Big Time

Green Porno Sundance Film photo

Sundance Channel Secures International Rights to Green Porno
We wrote about Isabella Rossellini's 8 highly surreal short-films about the sex life of insects, Green Porno, a while ago:

"If you've ever wondered how bees have sex (not as romantic as you might think), or wondered about the sadomasochistic habits of snails, these are for you (though, just as fair warning: the videos make mention of the organs and acts required to accomplish reproduction)."

Now that Sundance has acquired the rights, audiences outside of the USA will be able to enjoy these highly educational, if unorthodox, films....

Madonna's Carbon Tour, Kid Rock's Political Rant, George Clooney's Eco-Donation, and More

madonna red lips photo

Madonna urged us all to save our planet at Live Earth. But, obviously her claim to care doesn't apply to her own material needs. ...Not much eco-friendly noise on Madonna's Sticky and Sweet tour. Her crew released the goods needed on her 45-day world tour on the singer's website. ...Among the items: 3500 pieces of clothing, 120 powder puffs, 100 pairs of kneepads, 12 traveling trampolines, 200 makeup sponges, 69 guitars. ...AND 4 YSL lipsticks. ....Only 4 lipsticks to cover entire tour? Perhaps, that's Madonna's way to reduce her carbon footprint.

Brad Pitt's Green Wash, Gwyneth Paltrow's Fur Controversy, Miley Cyrus' Eco-Message, and More

brad pitt with facial hair photoEver fantasize about a hot, steamy shower with Brad Pitt? Well, now is your chance (sort of). The green-hearted celeb is hooking up with Kiehl's to support their new Aloe Vera body cleanser. ...In return for the power endorsement, all of the product's net profit will go to a foundation created by Kiehl's and the actor to support global environmental intiatives with regards to housing design. ....As you probably know, architecture is the actor's passion and put it to good use re-building eco-friendly homes in New Orleans. ...So, makes the sense the first big chunk of cash will go to Brad's Make It Right NOLA foundation.

Retro Green: Video of Jack Nicholson's 1978 Hydrogen Car

Jack Nicholson's Hydrogen Chevy
Not exactly news anymore, but this CBC video from 1978 is pretty cool in a retro-green way. It shows a young Jack Nicholson driving a Chevy powered by hydrogen that was made with solar power. He even does the classic move of breathing in the water-vapor exhaust. I wonder what Jack is driving these days?...

Johnny Depp's Green Home, Dark Knight's Eco-blunders, Natalie Portman's Green Project Runway, and More

johnny depp photo
...Alas, Johnny Depp is going public with his eco-lifestyle. A few years back, the super-private actor and hater of Hollywood excess bought a 35-acre Caribbean Island he endearingly named "F*ck Off Island." Now he's planning to have his "leave me alone" paradise run on clean energy. According to the Huffington Post, the actor is third in line to receive a grid-independent solar hydrogen system from Mike Strizki, the man who created the first solar- hydrogen house in the United States.

Demi and Ashton's Green Project, Miley Cyrus' Eco-song,Dave Matthew's Green Concerts, and More

demi moore and ashton kutcher photo
Unlike some "green grand-standing celebs", Demi and Ashton keep their do-good work low-key. According to ecorazzi, the power couple quietly slipped off to Guatemala to help build houses for Habitat for Humanity. The charity group is supporing the countries' indigenous organic farmers. ...And these two did seroius hands-on labor. "Demi and Ashton were actually building houses with tin roofs and schlepping breeze blocks in the midday sun. Ashton's father is carpenter so he has some experiences," reports a British media source.
