Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas Gets Its Green On

Consumer electronics present big problems, from producing them with unsustaibable materials, to emissions for manufacturing and using them, to the e-waste and toxic problems they present at the end of their lives.

The Consumer Electronics Association, however, recognizes these issues and is actively working on greening up the industry. They have released the first sustainability report in the industry, and are improving the impact of the Consumer Electronics Show with eco-friendly options.

OpenEco.org Expands Tools for Detailed Carbon Tracking

OpenEco.org is adding tools to its website in an effort to be a resource that can help businesses and organizations get a move on with tracking and reducing their greenhouse gas emissions.

The website, run by Sun Microsystems, is a place for organizations to calculate their emissions and access resources for how to reduce them. But the bigger purpose of the site goes far beyond these simple tasks.

The Carbon Footprint of Moving Bottled Water

John-Paul Flintoff of the Times drove to Oxford and back, a total of a hundred miles, and noticed that he had a bottle of water on the seat. He wondered how much energy it took to move it.

I converted the weight of the bottle (1 kilo) into pounds, and divided the distance (100 miles) into feet, using one of many online conversion sites. Then I converted the total number of foot-pounds into kilowatt hours. The result: 0.437 477 242 4.

New Carbon Footprint Standard Launched in the UK

Carbon Trust Footprint Label GraphicBBC News reports that the Publicly Available Specification 2050 - PAS 2050 - a newly created audit scheme to help companies measure the carbon footprint of their goods, was launched in the UK by BSI British Standards. The effort aims to provide consistency and transparency for British companies to communicate their products’ carbon footprints to consumers.
