design vote network

Michael Cannell—former editor of the New York Times House & Home section and more recently director of online content for Dwell—has started his own network of design sites.

“Nothing kick-starts discussion like matters of taste. Don’t believe us? Ask friends if they like, say, a particular European range, a high-end vacuum, or a new prefab home and watch them go off. Design Vote is a trio of sites where people can express their opinion daily by giving design objects the thumbs up or thumbs down. The votes are tallied in real time for all to see.”

museum of drafting technology

Architect Tom Hardy has created an online exhibit of some of his collection of classic drafting implements. Quite a nostalgic trip for the more senior drafters among us.

If you are the type that enjoys that then also make sure you check out:

How good is that? I found every single lead holder I’ve ever owned going back to my dad’s hand-me-downs from 1978.

moma home delivery show trickling into flickr

momaprefab04s.jpg

I just went to see the show myself this past monday, and I put the best of the photos I took up on Flickr the next day. I tagged them and yesterday decided to see who else had visited and tagged their photos with “Home Delivery”. I was pleasantly surprised to see many other photos on Flickr. A great way to get a photo tour if you can’t make it to the show.

jetson green celebrates two year blog birthday with a green gift giveaway

Preston Koerner is celebrating the second birthday of his terrific blog, Jetson Green, by having a Green Gift Giveaway, full of nice prizes. Giveaways will be open until midnight mountain standard time on Friday, July 25, 2008. Go leave a comment to enter, and if you haven’t visited his blog before, I suggest spending some time there. JG is, for me, one of the very best green blogs around.

colorblender.com

ColorBlender is a free online tool for color matching and color palette design.

It works like this - you start by choosing a color in the first box, after which the site suggests a range of colors that work with your starting color. Add a second color and the range of the palette will be adjusted to work with both of them. It allows you to save sets and return and update them. And you can browse color palettes created and saved by other users. A very interesting interface and a great tool for anybody that might not feel confident with choosing colors.

slave huts of bonaire

These huts housed the slaves who were used to harvest salt, still a major export of Bonaire. Not to take anything away from the misery of slave life, but the huts, smack on the beach at water’s edge, are rather beautiful. These two photos were taken by Alida Thorpe, my favorite Fire Island photographer. Check out her galleries at pbase and spend some time at her blog, Long Island Woman.

roadside architecture compendium

Debra Jane Seltzer is a New Yorker on a mission to photograph roadside architecture across the country. Her travels and road trips take her all over the nation, and she documents it all, obviously a keen observer of roadside life. She meticulously categorizes and indexes her photos by state and type. A fantastic online museum of roadside design, the organization works. I was able to quickly find this beauty - the Weber’s Root Beer stand that is a mile from my office. Almost lunch time… see ya.

top five auction houses, from details magazine

Snipped from the article by Monica Khemsurov for DETAILS Magazine:

Top Design: The new breed of auction houses serve novices hunting for a mid-century lamp or a minimalist couch—not ascot-wearing collectors looking for a fusty heirloom.
