driftwood jewelry brooches from turkish artists yalos photo

Beachcombing becomes Filiz Ateş and Christiane Alaettinoğlu--and anyone who puts on one of their driftwood brooches, necklaces, or rings.

The two artists and friends gather materials on the beaches near their home in Alanya, on Turkey's Mediterranean coast, and sell the finished products under the name Yalos Alanya, from the Greek word that locals have adopted to refer to driftwood. Their whimsical designs also include sculptures and wall decorations of fish, birds, and other animals, as well as human figures, all crafted with the same philosophy:...

But some images represent something more; they have the power to create lasting impressions that embed themselves in the cultural psyche and spur us to action. Striving for the latter is the photography collective GHG Photos. This New York-based agency comprises science, environmental, nature and documentary photographers who have dedicated their lives' work to bringing attention to the issue of climate change.

A Poem for Election Day

Let America Be America Again
by Langston Hughes

Let America be America again.
Let it be the dream it used to be.
Let it be the pioneer on the plain
Seeking a home where he himself is free.

(America never was America to me.)

Let America be the dream the dreamers dreamed--
Let it be that great strong land of love
Where never kings connive nor tyrants scheme
That any man be crushed by one above.

(It never was America to me.)

O, let my land be a land where Liberty
Is crowned with no false patriotic wreath,
But opportunity is real, and life is free,
Equality is in the air we breathe.

Smooth Jazz Sounds Green with Robin Avery

Robin Avery smooth jazz green light image

Who knew environmental activism could sound so . . . smooth? "To the End" by Erkan Yurt

Sponsored by the Delegation of the European Commission to Turkey, National Geographic Turkey magazine, and Radio Mydonose, the competition drew more than 900 entries from 530 amateur and professional photographers.

Keep Calm With Posters By Douglas Wilson

wilson simple poster image

Letterpress is literally a dying art; the inks were toxic and printers often died young. It is almost completely extinct, practiced only by a few hobbyists and craftspeople. As a teenager I used to visit a neighbour who did letterpress in his basement; I loved watching his hands fly over the galleys of type and I loved the way you could actually feel the letters pressed into the paper. Graphic designer Douglas Wilson loves letterpress too, even though he acknowledges that "it will force us out of house and home."

Wilson delivers simple messages that resonate in these difficult times, preserving a technology that we may need again someday....

Artur Żmijewski: The Social Studio

0aababbkk.jpgThe videos of Artur Żmijewski are screened in almost all the major collective exhibitions and biennales these days. I caught a glimpse of his video in one such events and thought 'looks interesting' but i passed my way. In front of art cornucopia, video is always the last on my list and it gets my attention only if there's a seat available for me to have nap in the dark.

But on Thursday i took the train to Utrecht to see the solo exhibition of the Polish artist at BAK, basis voor actuele kunst.

Sure, theaters were getting greener on their own, thanks to the efforts of some progressive proprietors and forward thinking designers. But now there’s an entire initiative looking to sweep Broadway with unifying green policies. It’s the Green Theatre Initiative, and it just launched its comprehensive website last week. So what’s its impact?...
